[Experiences with the computer science major thru bachelor of science?]

If you want my 2¢, I'd consider the general stream. I don't want to sound cynical, but the video game industry is generally a lot less lucrative than other areas of CS, and generally requires more knowledge and effort. I think the general stream is the best for getting a job right away, especially if you aren't 100% sure of what you want to do. The beautiful thing about CS is how many fields there are within the same general bubble, and I think it's safe to say that the general stream would keep your horizons the... Broadest?

However. Do whatever you're most passionate about, and if you're sure you want to go into the video gaming stream, by all means, do it!!

[Do you think taking the general stream would also make it somewhat easier to learn other areas of computer science such as game development ?]

The general stream definitely covers the surface level of each of the other streams, so nothing should be brand new. By the time you're done with the degree (probably even earlier), you should have a really solid grasp on the fundamentals of programming and general computer science principles, and at that point you can really teach yourself anything you want!

I'd you're really brand new to programming, I think it would give you a real head start if you check out some videos and websites online, then you won't be completely starting from scratch. You can send me a message if you want specific videos or whatever, I'd be happy to help!

I like the major so far. Every class there's something new and interesting to learn, and it's always challenging in a good way. The professors are all very knowledgeable, and they're passionate about what they teach. The workload can be a lot at times, though.

You need some prerequisites to be completed before you can apply for the major, but you'll be able to finish those in your first year and the start of your second year. You won't need to apply for the major until you second year.

[I am in first year and want to get into comp sci, however I am worried that Macewan is won't be able to get my a decent job that so I was just wondering if it is very hard to get an internship for those in the higher years.]

Please read this lol I have a lot to say

I am currently 4th year at MacEwan and got an internship last year. It was not as hard as I thought at all, I know people in the UofA CS program that are finding it just as hard as I did when I was in that position. It’s just a lot of applying which takes time, and getting involved in events (refer to big rant below).

Understand that UofA MIGHT only offer you more recognition outside of Canada after graduation. But I think that’s a complete myth. MacEwan is a real and more than ever recognized university not much different from UofA at all. It’s really just a stigma from Mac being newer as a University.

Regardless of university, you objective as a student should be to:

Get involved with clubs

Participate in events (hackathons) Try to be social by sharing your enthusiasm for the field

FFS STOP WORRYING ABOUT SKILL LEVEL, GET INVOLVED WITH EVENTS ANYWAY I last minute joined a hackathon with a very skilled team in Calgary with NO SKILL but I still jumped in and what I learned on the go was extremely valuable and helped me get my internship.

For further context, I completed ONE challenge in the hackathon while the rest of the team completed upwards of 3-4 each, but I was still welcome and connected with great people that helped me learn about the industry. If you’re reading this PUHLEASSEEE just jump into these events, if you stop because you think you’re not good enough then you’re missing out big.

Same thing goes for applying. Apply everywhere, you will get trained for anything specific you don’t know.
